Arcadia News comes away from AFCP conference with three awards

The Arcadia News has been presented with three awards from the Association of Free Community Papers (AFCP). The AFCP represents publishers of nearly 3,000 free-circulation community papers, reaching nearly 45 million homes weekly.

The awards were presented at the AFCP annual conference in Tucson in April. The contest received over 2000 submissions from 138 publications, all vying for one of the 45 categories of the contest.

The Arcadia News created and published a series (1 - 2 - 3- 4) of ads in 2009 for advertiser Scottsdale Treatment. The series focused around a main character who evolved to different themes for the several months of the ad contract. The character was eye-catching and interesting enough to earn a 1st Place award from the AFCP for "Best Ad Series."

The second award was a Second Place showing for "Best Single Black and White Ad" - an ad for a photographer that was created by the advertiser themselves, and was published in the May 2009 edition of the paper.

"Our final and most proud achievement is the award for 'Most Improved Publication'" said publisher Greg Bruns, "as we've made tremendous efforts to bring the best newspaper to the best community in Phoenix." For this entry, the Arcadia News supplied the judges with a copy of the May 2008 & May 2009 newspapers for comparison.

Arcadia News,
An Award-Winning Newspaper

daveyaward
The Arcadia News was awarded a Silver Award in November in the 5th Annual International Davey Awards by the International Academy of the Visual Arts.

The award-winning editorial spread, designed by art director Doug Kelton, was a collection of staff and reader observations about Why Arcadia is a Great Place to Live. The double-page spread appeared in the center of the September issue of the News.

“The best part of winning an award for this particular feature was that it was one of our first attempts as a staff to produce a combined effort by editorial, sales, promotion and our readers,” editor Dale Messmer said. “That someone else recognized our efforts is very cool.”

The News entry was one of more than 4,000 entries from the best lovearcadiasmall firms in the world. The Davey Awards were createdto enable small design and publishing companies to compete against the Davids and not the Goliaths of the world for recognition.

“This is the first contest I’ve ever entered our work into,” publisher Greg Bruns said, “so it feels pretty good to win a little recognition for the job well done.

“We’re very proud of this Davey award, which we wouldn’t have received without Doug.”
